Chess Notation: the language of chess

Chess notation allows chess players to communicate the moves of a game. For example, one version of the famous "scholar's mate" can be described thus: 1.e4 e5 2. Bc4 d6 3.Qh5 Nf6 4.Qxf7#. The final position after these moves is illustrated in the diagram to the right.
The areas of this site that offer chess instruction requires understanding of chess notation. Learn to read and write chess notation:
instructions (guide at US Chess Federation website).

Deer Park players:
Explain your answer in a short paragraph and give it to your coach at chess practice. I will give a chess pencil to the first three players with correct answers.

Deer Park Chess: A Compendium of Lessons

The principal chess lessons that I used in 2004-2005 are available for training and review. Some of these lessons concern fundamentals, and are part of the training I offer every year. Others are one-time lessons, frequently from current grandmaster games. The complete pamphlet is available to read online, or to print for personal use as a PDF file. Access it through the link at the right.
