THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS EVALUATION OF THE BOARD

 

Each individual board member shall annually review the code of governance as a basis for evaluating his/her own conduct as an elected representative of the board of directors. Collectively, the board shall evaluate its performance in terms of its four major functions:

A.

Curriculum and Instruction. The board should demonstrate its responsibility for providing educational leadership by:

1.

assessing the nature of the programs desired by the community,

2.

formulating educational goals based on the needs and values of the community,

3.

encouraging curriculum development activities directed toward goals,

4.

approving materials, equipment and/or methods consistent with goals, and

5.

requiring and reviewing periodic evaluations of school programs.

B.

Policy Development. The board shall demonstrate its policy development responsibilities by:

1.

enacting policies that provide a definite course of action,

2.

soliciting input from staff, students and citizens before final adoption,

3.

monitoring the implementation of policies,

4.

reviewing policy and revising policy when change is necessary, and

5.

reviewing board and administrative procedures for consistency with policy.

C.

Management. The board should demonstrate its management responsibility by:

1.

reviewing budget proposals,

2.

reviewing revenues and expenditures,

3.

reviewing proposed labor agreements,

4.

reviewing staffing recommendations and evaluations,

5.

reviewing building and grounds maintenance and needs,

6.

reviewing transportation services, and

7.

initiating and reviewing audits.

D.

Communication with the Public. The board should facilitate an interaction between school and community by:

1.

distributing newsletters, descriptive reports, etc.,

2.

holding planning and informational meetings in the community,

3.

encouraging and providing for representative citizens to serve on special committees,

4.

soliciting opinion through the use of surveys and other means, and

5.

establishing and maintaining positive media contacts.
