Career Opportunity Presentation at High School

Shannon Brucick of the Work Force Development section of Greater Spokane Incorporated spent several days in September at DPHS with the freshmen and seniors explaining the career opportunities available to them in the Spokane area.  Brucick described the need for skilled workers, who make good wages and receive benefits, but do not need a four year degree.  The training for some of these jobs can be as little as six months and is readily available in the region.
Brucick stressed some manufacturing employers in Spokane are currently finding it difficult to hire people with the skills they need and many current skilled employees will be retiring in the next ten years.  Employers are seeking not only specific skills, but need people who are committed and show up to work every day and who can get along and communicate well with others.
Greater Spokane Incorporated works to expand the regional economy by partnering a highly educated and technically skilled work force with employers.  Industry sectors needing skilled employees include Manufacturing, Aerospace, Allied Health, Construction and Professional & Business Services.  One of the goals of Work Force Development is to provide awareness of industry career and training opportunities to the new generation of workforce.  Brucick encouraged DPHS students to go to the website greaterspokaneinc.com to find out more information about career and educational opportunities in the Spokane region

Link Crew Leaders Welcome the Class of 2012!

Class of 2012

Deer Park High School's incoming freshman (the class of 2012) kicked off the school year at the August 19th orientation in a fun, positive, active way thanks to the committed leadership of the DPHS Link Crew Leaders. The Link Leaders are made up of juniors and seniors from DPHS who applied last spring for the opportunity to help students make a positive transition from middle school to high school. The leaders spent 16 hours on the days prior to orientation in training to learn how to run the orientation activities.

This is the first year Deer Park High School has held the Link Crew Freshmen Orientation program - over 100 incoming freshmen participated! The students spent the majority of their time in small groups with their assigned "Link Leaders" doing meaningful and fun team-building activities. These leaders will serve as mentors for the incoming students’ entire first year of high school. If you know a freshman please ask them about their Link Crew Orientation experience. The Link Crew Leaders will be wearing burnt orange Link Crew t-shirts the first day of school to make them easily identifiable. Leaders will be available to assist freshmen and other new students with lockers, and locating classrooms along with many other typical first day issues. Just look for one of them and they will be happy to help!

Welcome, Class of 2012, and a BIG THANK YOU to the Link Crew Leaders!

Students can pay for their ASB, fines/fees and Lunch Account monies at our "newly" moved CASHIER WINDOW.  The CASHIER WINDOW is located near the main office.  The CASHIER WINDOW is opened during regular school days before school, during break and after school each day.  Students MUST pay on their lunch accounts during these times.  The CASHIER WINDOW will not be open during lunch time.  Please be sure to remind your kids to pay before, during break or after school!

The ATTENDANCE WINDOW is open from 8:10 a.m. till 3:30 p.m. each day.  Students need to check in and out of school at the ATTENDANCE WINDOW when arriving or leaving school every time.  Parents/Guardians must excuse student absences and/late arrivals with Denise.  Please be sure to call the absentee line at 464-5571 or call and leave a message on Denise's phone at 464-5981 (preferred).  You can call the absentee line or Denise's extension 24-hours a day ... so please, be sure to call prior to school start time to ensure accurate attendance for your child(ren).

If you know your child(ren) will be absent prior to the date(s), please contact Denise and pre-excuse your child(ren) and she will give them a sheet to take around to each teacher to get assignments for the date(s) missed in advance.

Requesting HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS for students absences.  A student must be absent three days in order to request homework assignments.  If you child is absent one or two days, they will need to ask their individual teachers for missed assignments and make-up procedures.  Any student absent three or more days, please contact Denise at 464-5981 prior to 10:00 a.m. the morning of the third day and request homework assignments for past days and/or additional days for student absences.  Homework assignments will be gathered that same day (if you call prior to 10:00 a.m.) and ready for pick up immediately following the regular school day approximately 3:15 p.m.  Any homework assignments requested after 10:00 a.m. will be available for pick up the following day at 3:15 p.m.  Homework can be picked up at Denise's office at the Attendance Window from 3:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. You are welcome to check on-line at the SKYWARD link on the dpsd.org website to see daily assignments for your child.  This is a great tool for parents to access grades and daily assignments and contact your child's individual teachers, too.  If you need your ID number and PIN number for your child, please contact Dicki Thomas in the Main Office.

Due to construction on-site, LOCKERS are being issued to those students who request one.  Because lockers have been removed in parts of the high school to begin remodeling, the number of student lockers available has decreased.  Students should stop by and see Denise in the Attendance Office to request their locker before school, during break or after school.  Thank you kindly for your cooperation in this during our remodeling phases.

We look forward to seeing you all Wednesday, August 27 at 8:30 a.m.
