If you are a parent of a 6th, 7th or 8th grader attending DPMS or even a community member in Deer Park, you are invited to attend. Deer Park School District Superintendent, Mick Miller, will be speaking to us and giving us an update on the legislative budget and how this might impact our school district. Mr. Miller will also give us a summary on how things are going in our school district. Please contact Principal Brent Seedall at 464-5807 if you have any questions. Our last Parent Group meeting for the school year will be held on May 18 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm in the DPMS library. We hope you can attend these meetings and support our school! |

Student Led Conferences Scheduled for March 24-25 |
Deer Park Middle School will be hosting Student Led Conferences on Wednesday, March 24 and Thursday, March 25. Here is the schedule for these days:
Wednesday, March 24 - No School and Student Led Conferences 8:00am – 7:00pm
Thursday, March 25 - No School and Student Led Conferences 8:00am – 3:30pm
Parents of middle schoolers will soon receive more information regarding the Student Led Conference time for their student. Teachers will be contacting parents sometime in March by letter to schedule a Student Led Conference for their son or daughter.
Teachers hope that all parents of 6th – 8th graders will take advantage of these conferences. They are a wonderful opportunity for parents to check and monitor the progress of their child and also to get involved with DPMS.
If parents cannot attend and have questions or concerns about their child’s progress, they are encouraged to call DPMS at 464-5800 and set up an appointment to meet with their child’s teachers.

Read Across America |
As you may know, Tuesday, March 2nd is Dr. Suess' Birthday as well as NEA's Read Across America. Deer Park Middle School will be on an assembly schedule and spend the assembly time in our 7th period classes reading. We are encouraging the students to wear Dr. Suess hats or dress a book character with some simple prizes at lunch for those who come to the library in appropriate attire. Students will also be allowed to bring a stuffed animal to read with. We are always encouraaging students to read through our Reading Counts and Pizza Reading reward programs, but actually leading by example is the best way to encourage kids. Remind your child to dress-up, bring a stuffed animal or just their favorite book and help them get excited about reading!

ATTENTION STEPPING STONE FAMILIES! |
We really need your help! We are in the process of sending the next round of Student Progress Reports home from the after school program. Please read it over with your child, sign it and return it to school. Also, the staff will be contacting you to discuss program components and your child's strengths. I hope you can take a few minutes to talk with them. We have been communicating with the regular school day staff regarding your student and what we can do in the after school program to best serve your child. If you have any questions, please contact me at 464-5838 or kellerg@dpsd.org.

“Sweet Tooth” Sweetens Things Up at DPMS |
Chocolate suckers, bite-sized chocolates, caramel corn, white chocolate gorp, and flavored pretzels are just a few of the items sold by the students in Teri Goe’s living skills class. The Sweet Tooth, the name of their business, was founded in 2002 with a grant from the director of Special Services. The students participate in cooking, advertising, sales, and packaging. They also have to count change, do some bookkeeping, and learn about profit and loss.
The chocolates are made by melting chocolate and pouring it into molds. “Making chocolates and the other stuff is fun, “says student Hunter Bradford. Items are sold at school during the last 15 minutes of the lunches to students and staff. Prices range from $.25 to $3.50 for a solid chocolate Valentine heart. The sales coincide with holidays: Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, and Mother’s Day. Special chocolate boxes filled with candy are available for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. For Easter, a raffle is held for a basket filled with candy and a stuffed animal. “Each year we try to make a few changes and add something new to keep the sales interesting,” says Goe.
Response to the sales has been very good. There are even a few bus drivers who purchase goodies to support the students and some parents who stop by the school on sale days. Money the students earn pays for field trips. Lunch at the Pizza Factory followed by bowling at Deer Park Lanes usually happens in the spring. An end-of-the-year trip is planned for Wild Waters in Coeur d’Alene. “The trips are fun!” exclaims Katherine Schuler. Four years ago the class voted to purchase a refrigerator for the classroom to help with chocolate production.
This has been a great learning experience for all of Goe’s students. She explains, “Not only are the students making business decisions and learning about hygiene, they have to cooperate with others and use appropriate public behaviors. They seem to enjoy the food they make and I see confidence gains in many other areas, too. They aren’t afraid to try something new.” Hans Christensen likes making candy and says, “We cook a lot of good food and we’re proud that we make it.”
