About DPMS

Thanks for Visiting DPMS!

Deer Park Middle School is located in the beautiful Inland Northwest. Surrounded by fields, forests, lakes and wildlife our school sits in the middle of a large valley, with mountains in three directions; the city of Spokane is approximately 20 miles to the south (view Spokane area map). Deer Park presently has a population of well over 3,000 within the city limits, while an additional 12,000 live within 15 minutes of the downtown area.

Deer Park Middle School has experienced steady growth in recent years, and will have a student population of around 460 in 2007 - 2008. Student population throughout the Deer Park School District continues to grow as well; in September 2004, district enrollment was at 2040 students. Enrollment grew to 2153 in September 2005, and to 2310 in September of 2006.

DPMS serves students in grades six through eight; the sixth grade has its own "wing" of the middle school campus. Staff in our school district are committed to providing a positive and productive experience for all students - and the staff here are DPMS are no exception. Academically, we are proud of the significant strides our students are making toward meeting the state learning standards. Ten years ago, as our state embarked on the use of the Washington State Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) to measure student achievement, just 29% of students at Deer Park Middle School met the reading standard, 25% met the writing standard, and only 15% met the state standards in mathematics. We are proud of the academic gains students at our school have realized over the last ten years: last year (2006 - 2007), we saw steady improvement on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning, with 74% of our MS students meeting the reading standard, 78% meeting the writing standard, 56% meeting the mathematics standard, and 53% meeting the science standard. While these are gains to celebrate, we're committed to continuing these improvements!

In addition to these "core" academic areas, DPMS has a comprehensive program that includes courses in social studies, world languages, physical education, and the arts. Also, there are many exciting and engaging opportunities for students to stay involved after school; there are many athletic programs to choose from, there are after school activities such as yearbook, and we also have fun after school programs available through our Safe Schools Healthy Students grant. School is always such a more enriching experience when students get involved and invest themselves in these programs - we stongly encourage students to participate!

These "middle years" are an exciting and immensely important time in life - these three years play a vital role constructing a solid foundation for success in high school. Whether in the classroom, on the athletic fields, or through participation in one activities, Deer Park Middle School is a place where students can experience a positive environment for learning and personal growth.
