Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) – Washington State’s standards for learning and teaching; in broad terms, the EALRs explain what students should know and be able to do in each content area.

Grade Level Expections (GLEs) – Established by state level content teams, the GLEs describe the specific knowledge and skills student should acquire in each grade, from kindergarten through high school. The GLE as a deeper level of specificity to each of the EALRs.

New Graduation Requirements - Beginning with the class of 2008, students graduating from public high schools in Washington must earn the Certificate of Academic Achievement by demonstrating achievement of the 10th-grade reading, writing and math standards on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) by the end of high school. Science will be added to the certificate’s requirements for the class of 2010. The certificate helps ensure that all students – not just the college-bound – have the basic skills needed to succeed after high school, regardless of where their families live, how much money they have or what language they speak. Additionlly, students must complete a culminating project, meet credit requirements, and craft a "high school and beyond" plan.

Alternative Assessment - The assessment of special education students and the alternative assessment system are the two alternative testing routes for students who are not best served by taking the "standard" WASL test. House Bill 2195 mandated the creation of an alternative method of assessment that would be equivalent to the WASL while offering students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills through a different format or means. The process of choosing an appropriate assessment for special education students or determining what accomodation they will require is not a simple process - there is a great deal of decision making that goes into making correct decisions in assessing students with special needs. OSPI has put together an excellent PowerPoint slideshow that details the process for how to choose and use accommodations for students with disabilities for instruction and assessment; you can download this presentation using the following link - How to Choose
