Deer Park School District’s Board of Directors is now accepting applications to fill a vacancy on the board created by the pending resignation of Greg Schuler, currently representing Director Area 1 (the board will officially accept Mr. Schuler’s resignation at their meeting on November 14, 2022). Upon completion of the process of choosing a replacement, the appointed candidate will serve as the Area 1 representative until the next regularly scheduled board election (November 2023) – at that time, the director seat will be up for election.

Applicants interested in serving the unexpired portion of the term must reside in Director Area 1.  COMPLETED APPLICATIONS ARE DUE MONDAY, DEC. 5th (by the close of the business day, 4:00 pm).

A map showing all four Director Areas is available using this link – DPSD DIRECTOR AREAS (use the zoom feature of your .pdf software to zoom into the street-level boundaries of Director Area #1). Note:  Deer Park does have one board seat designated for an “at large” director, a seat that can be filled by a candidate who resides anywhere within the district’s boundaries. Should you have questions about whether a specific address is inside the boundaries of Director Area #1, please contact Superintendent Travis Hanson at 464-5500.

Per Board Policy and Procedure 1114, the vacancy will be filled through an application and selection process (pursuant to RCW 28A.343.370 and 42.30.110). Information about the selection process, including all necessary paperwork, is available using the following link:

Interested candidates can also pick up the packet of materials at the Deer Park School District office between the hours of 7:30am and 4:00pm, Monday – Friday. The four remaining school board members will review candidate materials the week of December 5th, and plan to conduct interviews with chosen finalists on the evening of December 12th. The candidate selected for appointment to the board will be sworn in at the board’s meeting on January 9th, 2023.

Simply stated, it is not the job of the Board to manage schools, but rather to oversee that schools are managed well. That being said, a school board’s list of duties is lengthy, including providing input on and approving the District’s strategic plan/direction, hiring and evaluating the Superintendent, making decisions on property acquisitions/sales, approving contracts, authorizing bids and expenditures, approving school budgets, approving the district’s core curriculum, and providing general governance and oversight of all district operations.

The authority of individual board members is limited to participating in actions taken by the board as a whole when legally in session. Board members do not assume the responsibilities of administrators or other district employees. All business of the Board of Directors is conducted in open public meetings except for matters legally allowed to be discussed in Closed or Executive Session.

If you have questions about the open seat or about the duties and obligations of school board directors, please reach out to Superintendent Travis Hanson at 464.5500.

Completed materials can be submitted via email to Superintendent Travis Hanson (, sent via USPS to the address below, or hand delivered to the Deer Park School District Central Office during regular business hours.
