The Deer Park School District is now accepting applications to fill a vacancy on the Board of Directors created by the resignation of Brad Erickson, Director in Area #2. The appointed candidate will serve as the Area #2 representative until the next regularly scheduled board election (November 2021); at that time, the director seat will be up for election.

Applicants interested in serving the unexpired portion of the term must reside in Director Area #2.  COMPLETED APPLICATIONS ARE DUE FRIDAY, JULY  31.

Alternately, interested candidates can pick up the packet of materials at the Deer Park School District office between the hours of 7:30am and 3:00pm, Monday – Thursday. The four remaining school board members will review materials submitted the week of August 3rd, and plan to conduct interviews with finalists during the week of August 10th.

Simply stated, it is not the job of the Board to manage schools, but rather to oversee that schools are managed well. That said, a school board’s list of duties is lengthy, including hiring and evaluating the Superintendent, making decisions on property acquisitions/sales, approving contracts, authorizing bids and expenditures, approving school budgets, approving the district’s core curriculum, and providing oversight of all decision-making related to personnel.

The authority of individual board members is limited to participating in actions taken by the board as a whole when legally in session. Board members do not assume the responsibilities of administrators or other employees. All business of the Board of Directors is conducted in open public meetings except for matters legally allowed to be discussed in Executive Session.
