Supporting ongoing learning throughout the extended school closure
We’re committed to connecting with kids and providing opportunities to learn throughout the extended closure. While a completely remote learning model is new to most of our teachers and students, we’re hoping to get better as we go! For families without access to wireless Internet in their home, teachers have prepared packets of paper materials for students; teachers will continue to produce these packets going forward. For families with wireless Internet access in their home – or a smartphone with hotspot functionality – Deer Park Schools District is providing Chromebooks to students for use during the closure.
If you’d like to check out a Chromebook for your student(s), there are a couple things to keep in mind. First, a Chromebook is a unique computer – by its very design, it’s an internet-connected device. While these laptops do have limited offline functionality, traditional applications cannot be installed and hard drive space is minimal, as they’re really intended to access web-based resources and data stored in the cloud. If your children will not have easy access to wireless Internet, we do not recommend checking out a Chromebook.
Also, Deer Park has not previously allowed district-owned student devices to leave the district, and thus have not installed or implemented any mechanism for enforcing content filtering on district devices used outside our network. WHEN CHROMEBOOKS ARE USED OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL DISTRICT NETWORK, THEY ARE UNFILTERED (aside from any filtering you’ve configured in your home). It’s up to parents to make sure students are practicing good digital citizenship and online safety.
To request a Chromebook device, use the button below (one request per family). If you’re unable to complete the form, or have questions about availability of paper packets, call the Deer Park School District Office at 464.5500 between 8:00am and 1:00pm. If you have questions specific to Chromebook checkout, call 464.5555 between the hours of 7:30am and 3:00pm.
CHROMEBOOKS CAN BE PICKED-UP IS AT THE DEER PARK SCHOOL DISTRICT MAIN OFFICE – the District Office is located at 428 N. Main (Home Link Building/Old Deer Park Elementary). Come in the front doors of the building and enter the first door on your right. Presently, office hours are 8:00am – 1:00pm. If you’re unable to come to the district office at this time, call 464.5500 and we will work to arrange a suitable time to get the device in your hands.
NOTE: We’re working to comply with the Governor’s “Stay Healthy, Stay Home” order, and will be making every effort to observe social distancing guidelines during the device checkout process.
