Tonight, March 27, at 6 pm at the D.P. High School library, is a regularly scheduled School Board
meeting. IF you are interested in the procedure to select a new Superintendent, replacing Travis Hanson,
please know that they plan to share an update on their search process at that time. Are you welcome to

SPRING BREAK is straight ahead, you know! All next week, April 3 through 7, is YOURS to play with,
dream with, be productive with, LIVE happily with! May good days abound!
Progress reports, me darlins, are past due, as in do-do for some forgetful ones.
This is the second week of some top-notch SBA testing prep, thanks to Richelle Harget. Come
experience her skillful instruction as she leads folks through an orientation of the testing process,
describes how to use the tools imbedded in the test, as well as sample exercises in the following areas:
March 28-30: ELA PT (Writing) 3:15- 4:15 pm, Computer Lab- Deer Park Campus
Next month, Richelle will also be holding practice sessions, April 11-13 and April 18-20 in Math
approaches. Thanks for attending these sessions – parents are welcome, too, of course!
The Choreographer’s Showcase is THIS THURSDAY, March 30 th at 3:30 pm, in D.P. Gym. Everyone is
signed up and ready to perform?? The prize for our winners – they will be featured at the DPHL Dance
Concert held on Saturday, May 20th. All levels of dance participants are encouraged to perform for this
week’s showcase...JUST DO IT!! (In case you’re in need of last minute reminders: Dance music must be
approved- so send Miss Darla an email with the song. Make sure you provide your own music the day
of showcase. CD formats are easy – a Bluetooth speaker is available or you can provide your own. Try
to have at least 2 minutes of choreography.) AND - the sign-up sheet is outside the ballet room. YOU’LL
BE SO GREAT!
Final call! Registration forms for your family, for NEXT year in Home Link are due THIS Friday, March
30. These forms are for your current students or for any additional students of yours that will be
attending Home Link. Get ‘em in, my friends! Our Orientations for new families from our waiting lists
are scheduled already for April. Our intake numbers are based upon commitment numbers from this
current year’s families. If you’re ambivalent about anything concerning next year? Make an appt with

CURRICULUM orders for the remaining few months of this school year are due by April 14th. That’s

The District Transportation has asked that we remind parents not to park on Main Street, on the
Admin side of our Deer Park site. The pick-up/drop-off bus sites for district students become blocked.
We apologized for such, and thank you for helping us keep that parking free zone!

The first day of SPRING is Monday of this week! Whoop!! Such an
endless winter, and we made it!! Breathe it in and let the joy course
through you! And remember, "When one flower blooms, spring awakens
everywhere.” Beautiful.

Guess what starts this week?? Some top-notch SBA testing prep,

This week includes Saint Patrick’s day! Will you be wearin a bit o’
the green? Telling a few Irish jokes? Enjoying some Irish Stew? Well,
you can bet that I, Molly O’ Murphy, will be! Join in, me lads and
lasses!!
First, a little something about last Friday’s Game Night. Man oh man,
were there some tremendous contributors to the evening’s wonderful
success. Gina- for your overall management and planning of events and
particulars- where would we be without your keen ability to rein
everything together?? And all of it done with that glorious smile of
yours! Tracy Tobeck- your Volleyball-ers were the best of
entertainment, with skills traceable directly to YOU! Huge thanks to
your planning and ordering…every one of our teams had a shirt that
distinguished them- so great of you, Tracy! It wouldn’t be Game night,
Nancy Brickner, without your Dance Team’s performances- pretty special
that your team captains originate every one of the dance steps that
the audience witnesses and enjoys. Wow to the leadership opportunities
you give our students! And Nick Tucker, for your work with the
Basketball-ers; Shannon Sieman for the musical uplift that your Choir
contributed; Marie Layman for the student Signing accompaniment to the
Pledge of Allegiance (cool!), and lastly? Shani Hunsaker- your
cheerleaders were a thrill to watch and cheer with! Every sweet young
girl was all-in, of high enthusiasm, and so confident= what great
skills! To ALL who attended and contributed to Game Night – thanks for
the feel-good night!!!

BRIEF REMINDER: if you pack a container of pre-packaged macaroni and
cheese for your little ones’ lunch? Maaaybe you could send it
prepared, instead? We’re finding that many of our younger students
don’t eat for at least 20 mins because there’s a wait for a microwave,
and then the actual process of macaroni preparation. It’s not speedy!
Just a thought!
The Character focus for this month of March is ENCOURAGEMENT. Is there
anything better?? One of our Consultants has offered these reminders
of encouragement:
A word of encouragement is it refreshing as a cold drink on a summer day.
A word of encouragement during failure is worth more than an hour of
praise after success.
A child needs encouragement like a plant needs water.
We should seize every opportunity to give encouragement, because
encouragement is oxygen to the soul.
Encouragement is always other-focused, with words that inspire and
reassure others, while giving support, confidence, or hope to someone.
So, my friends, never underestimate the power of your encouraging
words; YOU can the world go around! (Annnd, may you experience the
luck of the Irish this week, to boot!!)

MEMO – February 21 through 24, 2023 & February 27 through March 3
Guess what? Last weekend, two of our students, Ethan Frank, and
Hezekiah Slind wrestled in the Regional Wresting tournament, with
great results! This is Hezekiah’s first year ever, to wrestle, and he
took fourth place regionally. Something! And Ethan, after wrestling in
the Championship match, is now ranked third in the State, and will be
wrestling this weekend in the Tacoma Dome, against other state-ranked
individuals. Big stuff! Man oh man, you’re doing us proud, you two
mighty men!!
Are your children returning to Home Link next year?? Say YES! If this
is true – please remember to look through the Registration packet
that’s in your mailbox. It’s a good guide as to the forms involved in
securing your place, year by year. An important reminder is that you
must go online and fill out your non-resident enrollment form if you
live out-of-district. All the paperwork needs to into Connie’s hands
by March 30…from your competent hands to hers; sounds like a winning
combo!
Parents of younger students (K through 2nd grade): we have a tool that
is sensitive to visual recognitions that children experience. The test
is a spot-check on what young ones see and can identify; it is quick -
lasting no more than 1 to 2 mins. This is a pre-dyslexia screening and
the results are just for parent information. You may certainly sit
with your child as he/she responds to the assessment. If you’re
interested, great! Your Consultant administers the assessment.
We continue to remind students that cell phones are NOT to be in use
during the school day. I know that it’s easy to get sloppy and
forgetful…so please help your kids remember? Because, alas, we WILL be
taking them.
Speaking of assessments, you’ll be receiving some information on the
Smarter Balanced Assessment scheduled for late April and early May. (I
know! Can it really be time to be thinking about spring testing??
Indeed, it is!) Just a reminder that starting this year, Home Link’s
results are woven into the overall district scores- so everyone’s
involvement counts. We’re so thankful for your willingness to have
your children participate- you’re just the best!
Home Link’s Young Writers Contest, open to any student in grades 3
through 12 is DUE March 2nd, at the D.P. Library. Is yours submitted
yet?? Remember the writing entry needs to be a narrative story; the
format for each entry, along with the writing traits that each entry
will be measured by is available, why, it’s in your very mailbox! The
entries will be judged and prizes will be awarded in three separate
groupings; 3 - 5 grade, 6 - 8 grade, and 9 -12 grade. And there’s this
bit of fantastic news: three of our program families have decided to
support the upcoming writing contest through their business
sponsorship. A big thank you to Empire Roof Coatings, Hiatt Services,
and DewNorth Aviation. Because of their generous donations, we have
fabulous cash prizes that are significantly larger than in years past
as well as a few other special things in store for our winners. Now,

There’s a free Gem and Mineral Show on March 10 and 11, at the
Colville Ag and Trade Center on the Colville Fair Grounds. Look for

Drum roll! Spirit Week will be March 6-10. Prizes will be awarded at
lunch for best participation…all of which is a gearing up for our
annual Game Night! So remember:

Wed. the 8th- Flannel Day
Thurs. the 9th- Favorite Storybook Character Day
Game Night March 10th at 6:00 pm at the Deer Park Middle School! Join
us for this fun filled family night! Our Volleyball classes have put
together teams and they will be competing for the medal. Also, if you
are in the 6th-12th grade, you have the opportunity to sign up to be
on a basketball team. The sign- up sheet is in the front office.
There will be two practices, Tues. March 7th and Thurs. March 9th.
Volleyball and basketball players must attend at least one practice if
you wish to be on a team. These practices will be held at the Deer
Park Home Link gym. Basketball will be at 6:00 pm and Volleyball will
be at 7:00 pm. Our young Cheerleaders will guide us as we focus on our
Volleyball and Basketball teams. Not to be missed!! Also, our Dance
Team will perform during half time and end our evening with the famous
Light Show! And is there FOOD? But of course! Hot dogs, chips and
drinks will be available for purchase. So, bring the whole family, we
say!

What is that bit of colorful excitement that greets you as you go
through Home Link doors?? Why it’s in the cards, and candy and snacks
and what-nots that the Charity Never Fails class selling for
Valentine’s Day. Need a little sumpin-sumpin for a friend, a Grandpa,
a Mama?? Step right up to their table of wares and contribute to two
great causes = theirs and yours! Happy shopping!! The Charity class is
very excited to be working with Kathy Starr's Sewing class to serve
the children at Anna Ogden Hall's crises center. The Sewing class
will be making personalized pillows and the Charity class will be
filling backpacks with age appropriate needed items. Also, beginning
in April, our Charity class will be starting our schoolwide reading
challenge. Prizes for each participant are purchased with the money
raised through Valentines’ sale funds. Thank you for your support of
the Charity class’s mission to serve not only our students, but our
community! The Valentines sale will end on February 16th.

financial gift. We were blessed to know this lovely girl- and each
year’s recipient is chosen because his/her heart exudes the same
qualities as Nicki’s. Ask at the D.P. front desk for all specifics;
$500.

Our 'Charity Never Fails' class has kicked off its 4th annual
Valentines Sale located at both Clayton and Deer Park campuses. Not
only do these Valentines provide an opportunity for students and staff
to share their love with others, it also raises money for their second
semester service projects. The Charity class is very excited to be
working with Kathy Starr's Sewing class to serve the children at Anna
Ogden Hall's crises center. The Sewing class will be making

Now that all of you are mindful of using the secured access/entrance
to the Deer Park site (thanks!) may we emphasize that end-of-day
dismissal needs to be along the Fourth Street side of the building. We
have kindergartners and other young ones who are bolting out of the
back gym door, saying their parent is waiting in that back parking
lot. We have limited ability to cover that exit adequately. And many
of these sweeties don’t realize that vehicles are backing up, or
pulling out. This worries us! So, we request that all students are
picked up along the Fourth Street side of the building. Would you help
us with this, parents? DANKE!!
I read recently about the discovery of a wandering sheep weighed down,
get this, by seventy- five pounds of wool that was extremely filthy
and matted. Rescuers in Australia, who found the sheep, speculated it
had been lost in the bush for more than five years. He was handled
gently by volunteers as the enormity of heavy fleece was sheared away.
Once freed from his burden, the sheep’s legs grew stronger, he ate
well and became more confident and content. Quite the visual, isn’t
it? We’re not far from that picture of the matted sheep when we feel
weighed down by physical, mental or emotional burdens. We don’t
function as well, do we. Maybe we could make a deliberate effort this
week to reach out and comfort someone alongside us who needs a
supportive lift. Imagine what this sort of encouragement could mean to
a person who feels weighed down, lost, or forgotten. It might start a
shearing process that could eventually result in a spring in their
step. And in yours as well!

February arrives with an arctic blast! Brrrr! Such cold temperatures this week! Please make sure you take good precautions, as you send your kiddos our way, won’t you? They need coats, hats, gloves AND good sense about wearing them!
This week, all classes in the Art and Woodworking portable at Deer Park will be displaced to alternate meeting spots. Severe leaks were discovered in that portable last Friday and the back wall is now experiencing some reconstruction. This rebuild will be ongoing, but after this week, our classes will be able to resume their normal locations, despite workman and occasional competing noise. It’s caught all of us off-guard… BUT! Classroom adjustments have been made; Specialists have been so accommodating and gracious; we’ll guide affected students, no worries, and it’s gonna work! Deer Park’s Family Room will have classes taking up meeting space this week (parents who enjoy this room while their kids are elsewhere…it’s going to be a bit squished, just know!). A MILLION thanks ahead of time to EVERY single one of you for being your flexible selves the next four days!
Integrity: Character award winners for this past month are being chosen for this value. I say wow. Few other values encompass as high a personal quality. These students understand the challenge of doing the right thing always, regardless of circumstances…of being the same person to everyone one encounters, and of always being so very honest. Hats off to these winners- our finest!
Now that all of you are mindful of using the secured access/entrance to the Deer Park site (thanks!) may we emphasize that end-of-day dismissal needs to be along the Fourth Street side of the building. We have kindergartners and other young ones who are bolting out of the back gym door, saying their parent is waiting in that back parking lot. We have limited ability to cover that exit adequately. And many of these sweeties don’t realize that vehicles are backing up, or pulling out. This worries us! So, we request that all students are picked up along the Fourth Street side of the building. Would you help us with this, parents? DANKE!!

SO! Tell me, why do skunks love Valentine’s Day? Why, because they’re scent-imental creatures, of course! And why shouldn’t you fall in love with a pastry chef? Because he might just dessert you. Hey! Do you know what one calls a very small valentine? A valen-tiny! Now, did you hear how the phone proposed to his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day? Right! He gave her a ring! Maybe you already know what the flame said to his buddies after he fell in love? “I found my perfect match!” Then there are the bed bugs who fell in love – yep, they’re getting married in the spring! Know where all the hamburgers take their girlfriend on Valentine’s Day? To a meat-ball, of course! I know these are all on the corny side, but in the middle of this juuust so very long winter, isn’t it delightful to have something that makes you smile- even a lop-sided smile?? Yep! So I say, grab a box of chocolates and get ready to snicker at the cheesy messages which Valentine’s Day cards often present. Those little valentines are here to stay whether you roll your eyes or not. One more: Knock knock. Who’s there? Olive. Olive who? Olive YOU! (And I do…each one of you!) I had an opportunity to be in some delightful classes this past week; makes my entire day to see first-hand the quality of what our students experience at the hands of some pretty amazing Specialists. From Derby car construction, to the immensity of the world’s oceans and the life within them, to stunning art from paint and strokes from paper towels, to first-rate Piano instruction to our Academic track courses… I pinch myself at the offerings! That said, should there be a need to exchange one class for another? THIS is the final week to re-arrange. Starting next week (January 30 - Feb 3), all student class schedules are set. OK? OKAY!
Youhoooo! All 10th or 11th graders interested in checking out, perhaps even attending NEW TECH Skills Center, please explore the options offered at the facility’s Career Night THIS Thursday evening, January 26th, from 5:30 - 7 pm. You will meet instructors, and take-in the various programs available. Such great opportunities! And importantly, attending students will receive early access to next fall’s 2023 application. Slots fill up and classes close in such a hurry…THIS is a leg up: see you there!

HUGE thanks for your great attitudes about morning drop-offs at the Deer Park site. You folks were out-of-sight cooperative; why we even received compliments on the pom-pom enthusiasm displayed by Consultants. Yeah! They’re really something! As are YOU! One final time, allow me to include the instructions for morning arrivals at Deer Park: No longer will anyone be entering through the reception door near Connie’s desk. We are now utilizing the secured access on the west side of the building that flanks Main Street. It’s the more formal-looking entry near district Admin offices. To drop off your kiddos, please turn off of Main Street, onto Fifth, and into what we consider the back parking lot. There will be welcoming, loud staff members in place to guide you. You won’t miss it! If you’re parking and coming in? Great! Park on either side of the building, in the slots that you normally use. Picking up kiddos at the end of the day will be like always. Just know that everyone, Specialists, students, families- alike will all use the secured access from now on. Thank you for your patience with this security feature. We’ll all get used to this together, knowing we’re that much safer!

Anyone know what Hygge is?? It’s Danish in meaning and urges taking time away from the daily rush to be together with those you love, and to relax in life’s quieter pleasures. Sounds restorative, doesn’t it? We can’t neglect the things that balance us, my friends— especially because the tyranny of the urgent often claims so much of our time. Things must get done, yes, but not always at the expense of those things that bring us back. In case anyone reading this needs to be reminded to celebrate the small joys in life…just remember the Danes say to make the atmosphere cozy-appealing and let the great unwind begin! Det er rigtigt! (Yes indeed! in Danish).

I heard a message yesterday, on Martin Luther King Day, that emphasized the need for kindness always. We were charged to look for kind acts happening around us: they exist, and are right there, before us. Amen, I say!
Second Semester begins! The first week on new classes is off and running- may students and Specialists alike revel in all that’s shared; it’s all gonna be great! And thank you, Schedulers, for all the last minute re-vamping that was necessitated this time around. Whew. Now. Should there be any desire for change of classes? This week, and next are in place for such re-arranging, if you like. Beginning with the week of January 30 - Feb 3, class schedules are set; no more shifting. Get it, got it, good???!

There will be an information meeting THIS Wednesday, January 18, at 3:15pm in the Science Room Deer Park campus, dealing with vocational options open to your student for next year. We will be providing information about NewTech Skill Center, as well as vocational programs through Running Start. (In mid-March, we will have another meeting where we will be providing information about academic programs through Running Start.) If your child is at all interested in pursuing a vocational career and/or vocational training, we strongly suggest attending this meeting. If you are unable to attend or have questions, feel free to contact Rod Armbruster at 509 – 468 – 3315.

What an extraordinary man Martin Luther King was…he showed the American people/ all people that we can fight battles without violence, but instead with compassion, love, and kindness. He continues to make an impact on people of all ages and backgrounds more than 50 yes after his death. Here are a few of Dr. King’s quotes on acceptance and kindness:
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”

Please reread the front page of the second semester handout. The Schedulers bulleted key points to remember while preparing to register: vital to keep these points in mind!
You have noticed that our website/pencil page has altered a bit? The district made changes to each school’s website over the break (in compliance with a state ADA mandate). PLEASE go to our webpage and make sure you see the ALEx tab, and that you’re able to log in, PRIOR to the registration process. You don’t want to get caught off guard, now, if you’re planning to register online!
As you know, our Schedulers feel the class schedule may now be able to support an increase beyond five choices for our newest families. It’s true! How many? 7? Even more? That number will be determined after the majority of class registration is complete. S0 stay tuned, first-year folks, and we’ll give you specifics before this Friday’s Open Registration.
Join me in making a collective bow to the exceptional talents of our two schedulers; a very deep bow. We owe them so much! We also owe so much to this fall’s Specialists for the splendid classes they provided for our students- -first-rate opportunities, from the best of the best. Thank them this week, won’t you?

Need a delightful writing and/or art project you can choose to do as a family, or, kiddos can do independently? Ask your Consultant for information, or take a look on the posters in the school. We’ll be highlighting the efforts as we receive them – entries are due by Nov 17. Consultants have the turkey on cardstock, and the disguise can consist of feathers, paper, pom-poms, felt, crayon, fabric, really, any medium! The more unique and clever; the better!
Please take note that THIS Friday, November 11, all Deer Park schools will be closed in honor of Veterans’ Day. We try to be mindful of our military at all times…our veterans, especially, are dear to our hearts. Pay it forward for them this Friday, won’t you?
The Week of Thanksgiving cometh! Home Link’s schedule for that week is the following: we will hold classes on Monday, and Tuesday, as usual. HOWEVER, Wednesday’s classes will be held through the morning, only. Children will be dropped off at their morning site, AND PICKED UP AT THAT SAME SITE. No bus service. Mamas? They’ll be a’waiting for you, ready to hop into your car and be whisked off to your family Thanksgiving preparations =good times! Best of times, actually!
Need Christmas gifts for your little ones or just want to build your home libraries? Scholastic Book Orders are up and running again. Look for the order forms in the family rooms at both campuses. Ordering is all online, and we’ll place them in your mailbox when they arrive. Deadline for these forms is November 30th. Any questions, see Deb Haynes in the Library.
We’re now accepting any items you’d like to donate for our December Auction – money raised goes to a Home Link family for Christmas expenses. Such items can include crafts of any kind, novelties, decorative pieces, artwork, quilts—feel free to call Kathy Starr at 509-953-2933 with questions you might have. Bidding on items is ongoing through on Dec 12.
Relatedly, remember that the Student Christmas Craft Fair is on Dec 14th …your kids starting to plan??? We owe huge thanks to Tracy Tobeck and Kathy Starr – this is a big one to coordinate!
Kindness is the month of November’s Character Trait. Do you anyone who readily smiles at others? Welcomes someone new into their circle? Is considerate of others? Gentle and giving? Puts others first, before themselves? WHAT A KIND PERSON! Exceptional! Please nominate them for this month’s character award!
Related to the kindness award, you’ve heard the phrase ‘big doors swing on little hinges’? Small though they be, if the hinges weren’t there, the doors wouldn’t swing at all. Little things in our lives make a big difference…and, little things compound into good. Maybe it’s an encouragement you express; a smile you share with another; a thankfulness you exude = these attitudes are everything to those around you. I’ve watched so many of you go out of your way for someone; watched as you volunteered to help, witnessed you giving of yourself. Beautiful. We must never be too busy for all the little things…and if your door hinges happen to be squeaky, then oil them! That in turn oils all the ways you can impact and serve others...and THAT makes the world go around.

Hey there, Pumpkins! Welcome back to another week of classes and goings-on – all of which feel WONDERFUL because of YOU! Never forget how grateful we are that each of you is here, among us. Speaking of pumpkins – here’re the results of the decorating contest:
K-2 grade range: overall winner was Sonja Carter for the Candy apple. Congratulations, Sonja! Runner- ups were Vincent Ish for his poison apple, and Aubrey Harris for her pikachu. So great!
3-5 grade range: Overall winner was Emerson Brittain for Yosemite Sam. Go, Emerson! Runner-ups were Colton Birkey for the Lion, and Bryanna Sommer for the Cheerleader with a candy tongue. Both were top-notch!
6-8 grade range: Overall winner was Tim Hanley for the 'funny monster' (Super job!) Runner-ups were Martha Wittenberg's caramel apple; Amarie Morden's 'Girls life story', and Cecelia D'Ambra's Sasquatch. All clever!
9-12 grade range: Overall winner was Aly Coe for the fall tree farm scene. Very cool! Runner-up was Abigail Fauth for the Star Wars character. NICE!
There were exactly 100 pumpkins submitted this year! How fantastic is that??! HUGE THANK YOU to Tracy Tobeck and her class! You coordinated these efforts, and you had the unenviable job of making selections among all those 100 entries. All those pumpkins were.the.bomb!! Fabulous efforts, kids!!

It was a ball to see you, talk with you, watch your kids interacting while taking in all the activities provided. What an extraordinary community this is! We’ve never had so much candy donated; volunteers appearing right and left; a spirit of giving and helping laced with smiles everywhere…if we could pull off one of these every month, we would!!! Gina Levering is a marvel among marvels. That’s a stand-alone sentence. Where would we be without her?? Heartfelt thanks to Tracy Tobeck’s Charity First class for all their help, and one student in particular, Sarah Emery, put in many, many service hours on small details for this event. And thanks to all of YOU sweet ones for coming and celebrating time together – that’s really what this is: a joyous time to grab a latte and a handful of candy and partake, family by family, in an atmosphere that relishes who YOU are and this way of life we’re all committed to – pretty nice company! Hope you met some new folks while rubbing shoulders with so many...thanks for blessing us with your presence! Come again please!
Any budding skaters out there?? Some Mamas wanted me to remind you that on the first Friday of every month, Patterson’s, in North Spokane hosts Home School Skate. It’s from 2 pm till 4 pm. The admittance cost is $8.50 if you bring your own skates, and $11 with roller skate rental.
There’s an evening Home School skate as well, from 5:30 pm until 8 pm. Admission is $10 if you bring your own skates, and $12.50 with roller skate rental.

October, my dears, glorious October in the Northwest! This stunning period of scrumptious weather continues! Besides trips to Green Bluff, and leaf-raking parties...wanna know how to celebrate this harvest of goodness?? Why, by participating in the pumpkin decorating contest, of course! Allll the details are on fliers most visible- do remember two things: the pumpkins are DUE THIS WEEK, October 17 through 20, and the judging will be this Friday, Oct 21. Prizes will be given to the best overall pumpkin in each grade category: K – 2; 3 – 5; 6 – 8, and 9 – 12. Winners will be notified and prizes will be available for pick up in the D.P. office on Oct. 25th. Got it? Good! Get ‘em in? Even gooder!
A big thank you, staff and families alike for obliging last week’s Lockdown drills- we received feedback responses from Specialists and so appreciate their voice on these surveys. We’ll have these drills periodically throughout the year (we must, by law), and no drills, going forward, will be announced. We need to be in a posture of vigilance, always, don’t we.
Student release at the end of each day is being done with more caution, and you folks have. been. amazing. Our request that no vehicles stop in the middle of the road, or park on the opposing side of the road in wait for kids to hustle across the street to them? Phenomenal compliance! Thank you! Both sites are doing their best to make the exchange quick yet safe…you all have cooperated 100%. Keep it up, won’t you?? THANK YOU!
Relatedly, remember, remember that children need to be signed out if removed early (say, for a doctor’s appt). Could you please do that for us at the front desk of either Deer Park or Clayton? Oh the worry and search engendered when a child, who has been present in classes, is suddenly nowhere to be found.
Oh my, is it time to be thinking of Progress Reports for October?? Oh my, IT IS! Oh my, just get them done and submitted, won’t you wonderful ones?!
We’re starting our third week of our annual Socktober sock drive! The goal is to collect as many NEW- WARM -SOCKS as possible for men, women, and children of Spokane County (Deer Park and Spokane) who are unhoused and in need of our help. You’ve been contributing??? Thank you, thank you! Guess what we’re doing next week, during our final week of collection?? We’re hosting Crazy Sock Week (Oct 24 through 28), where all staff, students, YOU can flash your socks in all sorts of nutty ways! Pin them to your clothes, wear them as scarves, as gloves, anything! All in the spirit of donation towards those in need. Ready to participate????? DO!
The Pizza Hut Book It Program is back! Would your children enjoy a free one-topping Personal Pan Pizza? Pick up information and Certificates at the Deer Park campus library. Good reads = good eats!
Heads-up! The annual Christmas Craft Sale is scheduled for December 14th. I know; it’s truly something!
Are Picture Retakes on Monday Oct 24th, from 9:00 am-12 noon? Can you arrive anytime during that period? The answers are YES! Come!
Lastly, our magnificent Home Link Harvest Party is NEXT WEEK, Thursday, Oct 27th, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. It’s lively and packed, and YOU don’t want to miss it! The preparations have been going on for weeks, and we so deeply appreciate your help! Could we still use more volunteers?? Sho nuf! Let Gina know! If you have some spare bags of candy??? You KNOW where to bring them! Great moment: envision that look on a thrilled kiddo’s face involving something too-good-to-be-true. One of our very youngest boys had to be gently stopped at DP’s front door as he was exiting. Yes??? said his happy eyes, as he was approached. We had to explain that those huge bags of candy (surely freebies??? in his delighted mind) had to be returned to that big basket. Oh man. The twinkle left his eyes, as the candy left his hands. BUT!! The thrills and spills of a young boy’s heart can still be had: HARVEST PARTY, THURSDAY, OCT 27, 3 - 5 pm. Be there, beloveds!

As she was leaving, one of our kindergarteners was heard to say, “Only seven more sleeps till I’m back!” OH! May that adorable sentiment be shared among all our students and staff- YOU families make this program the remarkable joy that it is! Thank you! And to those of you who measure time in sleeps – welcome back! It’s a new week!
A word on some safety issues: we will be holding lockdown practices each day this coming week. They will be in the mornings, only. It’s imperative that we schedule these with some frequency throughout the year. Announcing that there will be lockdowns will only happen this first go round. After that, they will be unannounced and at random, times; during lunch or during class exchange or…? Each one of us needs to experience situational awareness in varied circumstances so that muscle memory has a chance to develop and guide us should there ever be an emergency. Thank you for understanding that this preparation is a vital security measure and thank you for obliging the multiple practices.
Additionally, you may have noticed that student release at the end of each day is being done with more caution. With our added numbers this year, and there are increased vehicles coming and going during student pick up. We have to be extra vigilant the kids don’t bolt toward towards their family car or squirt in between vehicles to cross the road in front of each of our sites. We apologize ahead of time for any delays, or even your need to park to retrieve your children. We ask especially that no vehicles stop in the middle of the road, or park on the opposing side of the road in wait for kids to hustle across the street to them. One MILLION thanks for your cooperation, we want your kids to be as safe as you do! This pick-up procedure will be smooth as silk before you know it!
Heads-up! The annual Christmas Craft Sale is scheduled for December 14th. I know; it’s truly something!

I made a quick trip this past weekend to Yakima, for a granddaughter’s softball tournament. Beeeautiful weekend weather, wasn’t it? During one of the longer breaks, we grabbed some fishing poles and headed to a state park one mile away; cool pond within it! Amid the lily pads, the ducks and crazy heat from the sun, we caught over 20 fish in about 90 minutes. (Most very small trout along with about 8 catfish. All were tossed back in, but it was glorious/high times for the kids! The take away?? When experiencing these gorgeous warmish days and the precious times that may come your way… we’ve just got to pause and be wildly thankful for the stolen moments they represent. For me, it felt like summer all over again and what soul isn’t enriched by that, I ask!
Whatever you find yourself doing, beloveds, do savor the gifts when they come…they surround us, don’t they, if we just open our eyes and take them in! Happy Indian summer to all!

Hey, hey! October it is! Hay rides, pumpkin picking, corn maze, fruit orchards, old mail pouch barns, cider, gourds, hay bales, cornstalks, scarecrows, caramel apples…how am I doin? What do YOU love about this month, hmm? It’s a glorious one!
Our 2nd annual Socktober sock drive is upon us! For the entire month of October, we will have donation boxes at both campuses. The goal is to collect as many NEW- WARM -SOCKS as possible for men, women, and children of Spokane County (Deer Park and Spokane) who are unhoused and in need of our help. The fantastic Paulette Hines is partnering with Tracy Tobeck and her Charity Never Fails class to give kiddos a great opportunity for community outreach, and community service hours. The objective is for students and families to work together to create ways to collect new sock donations from their community, sports, jobs, churches, etc...giving everyone a chance to participate. (This is NOT just asking mom and dad to buy 10 pairs of socks, generous though that would be! There are posters galore…catch the spirit of this and join us, won’t you??
The Pizza Hut Book It Program is back! Set monthly goals for your students, and when they meet their goal, recognize them with a Reading Award Certificate. SO! Getting situated, wonderful Home Link families? Are you making that strong shift into the school year, and all that it’s going to require OF you and FROM you? As we step into October and cooler weather…it feels as though we’re literally drawn more to being inside, which makes it’s easier to establish a more serious attitude towards the things we must get down. Schoolwork? Goals? Important projects? And more! Years and years ago, President John F. Kennedy recounted a story of his grandfather Fitzgerald (yes, the signature F in his name). Fitzgerald and his friends did a lot of brisk walking to and from their school, often along this very tall stone fence. Each young man speculated what might be on the other side. Fitzgerald would say, “I’ll climb it and find out; one day I’ll climb it.” To his friends’ utter surprise, the day came when he threw his hat waaay up and over the fence. Whyyy?? Because Fitzgerald knew he’d now HAVE to climb over and claim his hat (it was part of his school uniform) — he’d DO what he always said he’d do. Throwing the hat forced action. Now, he was committed.
How about you, me, all of us- is there a priority that needs a strong commitment? A purpose, a goal for this year that needs a serious YES given to it?? Then! May we throw our hats over the fence, my friends, and energetically go after it! Commitment changes things! DO IT!

I heard a couple goodies in a Northwest Wildlife class this week. Here are a few you-won’t-believe-it-facts from kids: Did you know that a certain type of octopus can re-birth itself. (Really???) Or, did you know that male goats urinate on themselves to attract the females?? (Ummm, I guess beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder). And, did you know that eagles push their babies out the nest, but! they swoop down and catch them if baby is faltering…hey, now, that’s like lots of parents! Thanks kids! There were about 25 others, ps.
Couple things to note, from previous weeks:
Starting this very week, everyone’s happy with their class schedules, right? And it’s smooth sailing till January, when second semester begins the process afresh. Our undying thanks to Kara and Kaylene, for the feat this year’s schedule represents!

Nikki’s Angel Walk was a personal delight for you last Saturday? And perhaps you contributed to the scholarship fund and Charity Never Fails fund??? Many, many thanks for your participation in this most special event in our program life.

Time for a quick story? It was 1883, and the grand opening of the Brooklyn Bridge was slated for public viewing and use. This enormous undertaking of the suspension bridge had been 14 years in the making, with a loss of 24 lives. There was great fanfare and celebration; crowds galore! BUT! When the time for the actual crossing of the bridge, many, many were apprehensive; it meant certain death if the bridge failed. (Cue music from The Greatest Showman) because, yes P.T. Barnum stepped up. He sent 21 elephants, led by Jumbo, and 17 camels and carnival crew across the bridge. The lumbering elephants, some weighing as much as 10,000 pounds convinced onlookers of the bridge’s stability. Barnum trusted that the world’s longest suspension bridge would hold, and his trust engendered the trust of all others.
We all encounter situations requiring us to decide to trust, or not to trust. This past spring, I was aware that many folks weren’t quite sure they could trust the growth that the program was experiencing – would things be the same? Would additional families mean additional problems? Unhealthy changes? Well, as we enter our third week of classes for well over 600 kids, involving four complete days of classes at two different sites, and THE SCHEDULE IS HOLDING the weight of growth???! I ask you to join us in celebrating the feat that this is! It’s the accomplishment of so many staff members who worked long and hard and are STILL working long and hard to make this transition happen for you glorious families in this partnership. THANK YOU for finding us trustworthy, parents! THANK YOU to every member of the staff for believing this would be a year of THRIVING growth and goodness – and working to make it happen. THANK YOU ALL for this united achievement, and for every heart within it!

Was Sunday’s SUN like the best ever??? The sky was blue, the grasses were green, flowers a bloomin; life felt GOOD! I was reminded of the cutest kindergartener who, when giving me some dandelions, said, “These are my favorite flowers! And you know what my Mom did for me? She planted them everywhere!” Can’t beat that naïve enthusiasm!
Last week of classes, my friends! I’m as amazed about that as you are! Well! We experienced a stunning Saturday of Ballet and Dance ensemble (thank you to ALL who participated, and lead, and helped make the performances breathe life into the audiences!); and a Monday evening of Gymnastics galore by students of all ages, thanks to an unbelievable staff…these two events showcased our students, their talents, and their teachers’ dedication. MY, WE ARE APPRECIATIVE!!

THIS Wed, May 25th – ARTS NIGHT, at 7 pm at the High School Theater. It’s SOMETHING! Great variety – you gotta be there! The following classes are participating: Irish Dance, Cheer, Puppets, Dance Team, Fiddle, Fashion Design/Sewing, Drama 2 (All the World's A Stage), Intro to Drama grades 3-5, and Sign Language. (Tickets not required.) If you have a student in any of these classes, please contact the instructor for rehearsal times. Please come sit in the audience, and bask in all before you!!
Kindergarten and 8th grade Graduation- THIS Thurs, May 26, 7 pm at the High School Theater. If your Kindergartener or 8th grader would like to participate in the graduation ceremony, please contact Gina at 701-0101. This is always a dear, and delightful celebration! You’re welcome to join us!
END OF THE YEAR FAIR- Wed, June 1; 10:30-2:30 pm. Come for a full day of nothin-but-fun! Cotton Candy, Snow Cones, Popcorn, Corn dogs, Games, Scavenger Hunt, Chalk Art Contest, Volleyball Tournament, Face Painting and sooo much more! All Home Link families are invited! Remember, each food item requires a ticket…those tickets are free and are available at the front desk. Every family member may have 4 tickets/only parents may pick up the tickets. A word on the Scavenger Hunt Requirements: This activity is for 6th-12th graders. To play you must have a team of four and sign up in the front office before May 24th. CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS! The Fair takes at least 45 volunteers to make it a success. If you would be willing to donate 1 hour of your time to work a booth, please sign up at the front office. Gina will be contacting you the week before to let you know where you are stationed. Are you artistic? Consider the Face Painting booth. (We need at least 15 face painters). HELP, if you can! Thanks for your willing help!

A word on last weekend’s high school play! The play was winsome, funny and even included a puppet! I so hope you had a chance to plant yourself in the world of a charming bookstore, with living book characters, some hoodlums, a bit of crime and resolution. It was so GREAT, Rachel and Company… can’t wait for what you bring us next year! And thank you, thank you for the delights you always bring!

Last Thursday, we were honored by the presence and presentation of Carla Peperzak. It felt like a moment n the life of the program, and certainly in some of our lives as well. For those of you who joined us, we so thank you. Mrs. Peperzak’s book, Keys of my life; a Memoir, will be in our libraries. Would any of you want to own your own copy? Please let me know. And in case any of you would like more information on this historical period, a service called The Teaching Trunks is available through the Holocaust Center for Humanity. These are teaching guides and wonderful resources that can be on loan to your family, simply through request.
What a singular honor it was to have someone extraordinary in our midst, someone representing living history; a first person account of doing the right thing in the face of evil. May there be a bit of Carla Peperzak active in us all.

I read that deep roots never doubt that spring will come. Oh, how I love such confidence! (We’ll not speak of the snow!)
Remember, we have classes this week, but weeks April 25 through 29, and May 2 through 6 we will have NO supplemental classes whatsoever. How so?? Smarter Balance Testing will be the focus for those two weeks. All of you who are having your students test – we thank you! The program has Richelle Harget to thank for her skills in managing all-things-testing for Home Link this year; she designed the assessment schedules, room locations, assigned proctors, sent out pertinent information to families, led practice sessions and remained upbeat through it all. Sensational efforts…a million thanks for all your talents, Richelle! Good luck, all!
So! All class schedules resume, for all students, the week of May 9 through 13. There will be only three weeks of school remaining at that time. How, oh how did time spin this fast??
Yes, PROGRESS REPORTS are coming right up! (like those tulips and hyacinths!)
In your parent mailboxes, you have information on a remarkable opportunity that has come our way, thanks to one of our marvelous Specialists, Michelle Gardner. Clara Peperzak, a survivor of the Holocaust, accepted Michelle’s invitation to speak with Home Link students and adults on Thursday, May 12, at 9:30 - 11 am, in the DPHS theater. Wow for us. Any interested 6 through 12th grade students attending that Thursday‘s morning classes will need a parent permission slip to attend the event. They will be bused to the H.S. Any other students who are desiring to listen and learn from Mrs. Peperzak are most welcome, but will need to be accompanied by a parent. Please contact Connie for tickets (parents must be the ones picking up the tickets)…the theater has a seating capacity, and each of us will need a ticket to enter. Come with your interest and questions, and join us for a most extraordinary event!
Also in your mailboxes is an invitation for any parents who have been considering teaching a class for us-to let us know! We’re hiring a number of additional Specialists for the coming year, and if YOU’d like to be in that number- GREAT! Fill out the application and share your ideas with us. PROGRESS REPORTS! It’s the tail-end of the month of the month – everything squared away for your Consultant?
Now to April …please remember Smarter Balance Testing is scheduled for the weeks of April 25-29, and May 2-6. We put those two weeks aside to concentrate on providing the most convenient testing schedule for your family. As you tuck those weeks away, please remember that we have a number of opportunities (why, of course!) for your children to practice for the upcoming tests. The dates are listed below - all three are in the Deer Park Computer Lab from 3:15-4:00 pm. Any/all grade levels can attend the same session. The focus will be on usage of the actual testing tools. Students will also leave the session with materials to help with further practice. Feel free to attend with your children or send them on their own. Here are the dates. Please attend one or all nine!

Just like that, trees and bushes have leaves, and plants and lawns turn green
The tulips and daffodils and irises make their beautiful appearance, and then? The cherry blossoms!
All that spring cleaning gives you a fresh start (Hey, I added that to see if anyone was still reading!)
Aaaand lastly, summer is just around the corner!

HAPPY SPRING, beloveds!! As I write this, it’s the first day of spring - and it’s SNOWING outside. It’s like winter is mad and keeps storming out, then comes back yelling ‘and another thing!’ Ha! I read that somewhere- it’s a perfect description, isn’t it?!
FRIENDLINESS – that’s the character trait of the month. Know anyone who makes YOU feel interesting, someone who is inclusive and accepting of others, and makes you want to be where they are??! Right! Home Link is loaded with these difference-makers! Nominate a few!!
PROGRESS REPORTS! It’s past the 20thof the month, my darlins – thanks for completing those progress reviews for Consultants; they’re trying to wrap up all sorts of things before spring break. And yes, SPRING BREAK is right around the blessed corner…the week of April 4 through 8 will be ALL YOURS to play with. No classes whatsoever, school closed…just get out there and breathe in gulps of spring air!
Spring brings us some key events…please remember Smarter Balance Testing is scheduled for the weeks of April 25-29, and May 2-6. We put those two weeks aside to concentrate on providing the most convenient testing schedule for your family. As you tuck those weeks away, please remember that we have a number of opportunities (why, of course!) for your children to practice for the upcoming tests. The dates are listed below - all three are in the Deer Park Computer Lab from 3:15-4:00 pm. Any/all grade levels can attend the same session. The focus will be on usage of the actual testing tools. Students will also leave the session with materials to help with further practice. Feel free to attend with your children or send them on their own. Here are the dates. Please attend one or all nine!

One of our upcoming events is the Student Choreographer's Showcase in the DP campus' gymnasium Thursday, April 14th at 3:30 pm. This is a judged, hour-long event. Written feedback will be given. The winner will be performing in the Spring Dance Concert held Saturday, May 21st (12pm and 3pm). Choreography must be created by a Home Link Student; nothing derived from a dance studio, performed at a previous competition or instructor polished. We want to see YOUR creativity!!! You must sign up in front of the Ballet Room NOW, through the end of March. Please submit music for review before Spring Break. Miss Darla is on site on Tuesdays to review music.
Such a time this is, with so many events swirling around us internationally, nationally, as well as our own personal worlds – we can feel overwhelmed with pathos, with sadness and angst, can’t we? A seemingly unrelated question, but do you remember knowing of a cargo ship’s plimsoll line? Whatever weight or cargo is brought aboard a ship, (which lowers the ship to a greater depth), there’s a line leveled on the ship’s side above which weight cannot be added…the boat is no longer safe to sail because it’s below the plimsoll line. In other words, ships don’t sink because of the water around them. Ships sink because of the water that gets inside them. If YOU feel an utter discouragement at what’s happening around you, don’t let such get so deep inside you and weigh you down to a point that you’re actually sinking. Oh dear folks: YOU are LIFE-CHANGERS, every single day. Do your utter best to keep your head above water and stay buoyant; YOU mean so much to so many! Truth.

What a JOY to see so many of you at the Game Night last Friday evening! It’s the first time that we’ve been able to assemble as a program for several years – such a great night to celebrate our kids, their talents, watch some competitions and simply BE TOGETHER! Our thank you’s to the leadership and planning of some key adults: Gina Levering, Nancy Brickner, Tracy Tobeck, Shani Hunsaker, Trey Colvin, and parent volunteers – ALL of you put together a super night for ALL of us, and we loved it! Don’t go anywhere because next year’s Game Night will be here before we know it, and we’re keeping your splendid efforts on retainer!
News flash: a former student of ours, Bralyn Decker, attending Boise Bible College, competed nationally in the Next Generation Preacher Search, hosted by Pepperdine University...AND WON!!!! If you’d like to enjoy him in action…the following is an 8-minute clip, including judges’ reactions. SOMETHING!

REMEMBER: TIME CHANGE this coming weekend – we ‘spring forward’ Saturday night! And here’s a tip: if you find yourself in need of a good-sized nap on that following afternoon, just tell the kids, “Wake me up in 30 minutes, so we can clean the house.” Oh…you’ll be MORE than rested!
Just HOW are those entries for our Young Authors Writing Contest going?? Smashingly well?? You students in grades 3-12 have written some hum-dinger narrative stories and are waiting to turn them in, right? RIGHT!! REMINDER, the due date is THIS Thursday, March 10 – in the DP library, by 3 pm. I can’t wait to read them – and already appreciate every single student entry and the talents represented!
GAME NIGHT! Friday, March 11th, at 6 pm, at the Deer Park Middle School! YOU BE THERE! Our very own "Cheer Team" will BE THERE, our fabulous Dance Team will BE THERE, some hot dogs, chips, and drinks will BE THERE as well! Gotta love it! Remember, volleyball and basketball practices are being held BOTH Tuesday and Thursday evenings this week, with volleyball practice at 6 pm – and basketball practice at 7 pm. You must be in 7th -12th grade to play, and must attend at least one practice. DO IT! PLAN ON JOINING US FOR GAME NIGHT, FOLKS! Aaaaand there’s no better way to gear up for the games, than Spirit Week! Each day will have a different theme. Prizes will be given at each site during lunch for the best dress/effort. When we return to school next Monday (March 14), face coverings will be optional for all staff and students. It will then be a personal choice and we will respect each person around us, like always. May I just say that I’ve been exceeding proud of the way Home Link staff AND students have handled these most challenging past two years. It.Has.Not.Been.Easy.For.Anyone. Attitude, my friends, makes all the difference. A leadership guru whom I think the world of, John Maxwell, says the following:

The Reading Challenge - organized by the Charity Never Fails class ENDS this Wed, March 2nd; turn in reading tracker no later than 3pm. Prizes will be distributed next week, in the Deer Park office. (The deadline for the Silverwood ticket to ride is March 31st. Please don't use the same hours for both....we want to encourage as much reading as possible, so keep a goin’!)
We’re hosting a Running Start information meeting THIS Wednesday, March 2, at 3:10 pm, in the D.P. Science room. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of Running Start, the differences between Running Start at Spokane Community Colleges and at EWU, the application process to get into Running Start, and past experiences of Home Link students attending Running Start. We so encourage your attendance! The Community Colleges of Spokane are also holding two in-person Running Start information sessions in the following two weeks. More on that this Wed!

YOUHOO, sports fans…we are thrilled to announce that YES! GAME NIGHT is BACK! It’s on Friday, March 11th, at 6 pm, at the Deer Park Middle School! All Home Link families are welcome to join our very own "Cheer Team" as we cheer on our Volleyball and Basketball players. As always, half time entertainment will be provided by our fabulous Dance Team! Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be available for purchase. Our Volleyball teams are already practicing and underway. However, if you are in the 7th-12th grade and would like to play on a basketball team, please sign up in the front office. All Volleyball and Basketball players must attend one of the practices to qualify to play. NOTE: Practices are held on March 8th and March 10th. Volleyball practice is at 6 pm and basketball practice will be held at 7pm. All practices are in the Home Link gym. Plan on being at Game Night, folks – it’s a feel-good night for all!

SPRING IS ALMOST HERE AND SO IS STATE TESTING! Here are a few important things to know in a nutshell and mark on your calendar. More details will be in your parent box and in an email from your Consultant.
April 25-28: State testing for grades 3-7 at Deer Park campus. Academic classes only for grades 8-12 at Clayton campus. No enrichment classes this week.
May 2-5: State testing for grades 8, 10, and 11 at Deer Park. All classes cancelled this week.
Would you like to know more about state testing and let your child have a chance to practice? Then please attend one of our SBA practice sessions. They will be in the Deer Park Computer Lab after school from 3:15-4:00 pm. All grade levels can attend the same session. The focus will be on using the test tools, rather than on academic instruction (although we will cover key words in math problems, how to organize writing, and how to look for answers.) Students will also leave with materials to help with further practice. Feel free to attend with your child or send them on their own.

Helen Keller said that the best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched…they must be felt with the heart. Isn’t that a beautiful lead-in to Valentine’s Day? A special thanks goes to our Charity Never Fails class for 2 weeks of tempting treats and gifts AND the cause these gifts are contributing to...I think Helen Keller would be as moved by their hearts as we are.
Please remember that Presidents’ Day weekend is straight ahead… this Friday, February 18, and next Monday, February 21 are NON SCHOOL days. The District is closed. The birthdays of Presidents Washington and Lincoln were 10 days apart, and our nation therefore honors these extraordinary leaders together.
If Presidents’ Day provides a little give in your schedule, THANK YOU for using it to complete progress reports. That would be a perfect choice, Valentines…a timely gift to your Consultants. You’re welcome!

Our culture of character for the month of February is COMPASSION. This is something that the owners give away- like breathing in and out; compassion is their heartbeat. Anyone, big or small come to mind?? Of course! We have many!
Quick shout-out to the reading challenge organized by the ‘Charity Never Fails’ class. Students in grades K-5 must read for 10 hours and students in grades 6-12 must read for 20 hours by March 2. Reading trackers must be turned in NO later than this date to receive a generous reward from the class. (Do NOT confuse this challenge with the Silverwood Reading program. It’s great, too! If you’re doing both, keep your list of books and hours totally separate. No double-dipping, now!)

A priest named Valentine lived in Rome in 269 A.D. The Roman emperor Claudius the Crude ruled at this time. There was a problem – the soldiers needed time with their families and Claudius thought that fighting for their emperor was more important than families. Claudius issued a decree outlying marriage. “Anyone who performs marriage ceremonies will be put to death.”
Valentine performed marriage ceremonies. He knew that marriage is a celebration of God’s, and that marriage is the strong foundation of families, and families are the backbone of society.
That night Titus, a friend of Valentine, was arrested for preaching against the emperor. They took him to jail for trial. There was a woman that Titus liked, her name was Polinia and Polinia liked Titus. That night Valentine and Polinia snuck into the prison and rescued Titus. Somehow that night Titus asked Polinia to marry him; she said yes. They went to Valentine’s house and he performed the marriage ceremony. The emperor was furious- only a few soldiers were joining the army and marriage ceremonies were still going on. Rumors had it that Valentine was performing marriage ceremonies. And during the ceremony soldiers found Valentine and arrested him but he escaped out a back window and performed the marriage ceremony while they were running. The couple escaped in a cart. And Valentine was left. He was taken to the same jail that Titus had been in. While he was in jail he prayed that God‘s Will must be done. While he was in while he was in prison, a blind girl named Julia gave Valentine his meal, along with the other prisoners. The next night Titus and Polina tried to rescue Valentine but the guards blocked their way in. A few days later the regular meal was brought in, again by Julia who asked Valentine why he was so grateful. He replied, “It is because I know that God has a plan for me.” Then Julia questioned why he was condemned to death? “I wish I could believe that the God had a plan for me but I’m blind.” Valentine told her about God, and his miracles. Valentine kept praying for Julia‘s sight to come back. Then, suddenly Julia could see! Valentine thanked God.
On February 14, Valentine was stoned and beheaded. Titus continued Valentine’s work, and performed marriage ceremonies. After Claudius died of the plague, marriage was restored to the Roman Empire. The church dedicated Feb 14 to the honor and memory of Saint Valentine.
Evyn Lyon concludes by saying that Valentine’s Day is all about remembering the ones you love. May you do just that!

Valentine’s treats, gifts, and cards galore through Feb 14 (of course!)…ALL compliments of our Charity Never Fails class. Money raised from this project will be used to purchase supplies to make pillowcases for the Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital. Three H.L. classes are committed to making these pillowcases for children going through life-saving surgeries. YOU can donate flannel or cotton fabric (1 yard minimum) to our donation boxes, located at both campuses. Tracy Tobeck is spearheading this tremendous outreach; our THANKS to her, and to you for your support! Great stuff!

HASN’T IT FELT LIKE THAT??? Like maybe this past January’s been the longest month in the history of man??? That notwithstanding…we’re on to February!! – a month with hearts in the middle of it, lots of pink/red colors, and a Super Bowl, and Presidents’ Day weekend; I’m better already- how bout YOU??
Changing classes? DONE! Behind us! We march forward into this new semester knowing that students’ class schedules remain as they are, right? RIGHT!
Our ‘Charity Never Fails’ class is continuing the sweet tradition of service by making and selling unique Valentine’s treats, gifts, and cards. Tables with Valentines will be set up at both Deer Park and Clayton campuses starting Feb. 1st through Feb. 14th. That provides you two weeks to bless those in your life with an expression of gratitude and love, should you care to! Money raised from this project will be used to purchase supplies to make pillowcases for the Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital. At least 3 Home Link classes will be involved in making these pillowcases for children going through life-saving surgeries. You can also donate flannel or cotton fabric (1 yard minimum) to our donation boxes, located at both campuses. Tracy Tobeck is spearheading this tremendous outreach; our THANKS to her, and to you for your support! Great stuff!

Martin Luther King quotes are strikingly relevant, aren’t they. How thankful we remain. Because of the national honoring of this man, we have a shorter week ahead. But! It’s the first week of second semester – which means many new classes for a great number of our students. So rest assured, staff at both sites will be in place to guide and escort our younger students to their new classes. We understand the confusion, and we’re ‘on it’ for you parents! We thank you for taping those class schedules on kids’ backpacks or foreheads…it’s always such a help to know not just the name of class, but its location - else we‘re guessing along with the kids!
The portable, the portable, the PORTABLE is complete and frankly? Rather beautiful; both rooms! The maintenance dept. did a superb job of refreshing a 20 yr. old portable into something that looks brand-spankin new! We’re tickled and so grateful. And those marvelous teachers who have been displaced from their portable rooms since LAST MARCH deserve praise upon praise upon praise!! Thank you, Specialists for your patience, willingness, and upbeat spirits! Just this past week, classroom materials were moved, and rearranged into their new locales. Their students were enlisted, and stuff happened! Thank you all!
Then there’s MaryLou. A whirlwind of organizational approaches and energy to match. She MADE the transfer of supplies and materials happen for every single teacher affected. She took it on, and was inexhaustible. A thanks-filled bow of appreciation to your planning and fortitude, MaryLou. (And everything looks so good!!)

Quick reminder about school cancellations or two hour delays- if there is severe weather, the school district will make an all-call to alert families about status of Deer Park schools. If the district schools are closed, Home Link will be as well. If there is a 2 hour delay, our students will begin their day with their regularly scheduled 11 am class.

Home Link has 2 reading challenge opportunities for our students. First, many of you are familiar with Silverwood’s Ticket to Ride program. These are available to students in K-6th grades. Students must read 10 hours between Jan. 10th and March 31st. Sign-up is in the Deer Park HL Library.

First! High schoolers do remember: all projects, tests, make-up work must be completed THIS week. Your .5 academic credit and grade is on the line. Secondly! Parents, please know that many semester classes are putting on end-of-semester presentations- I bet a number of you parents will catch a few of those! ENJOY! The kids love to show off what they’ve learned! Especially to you.
Second Semester Class Registration is indeed THIS week! Make certain you’ve accurately checked your sign-up day/time. AND, as you sign your children up for classes…would you please make certain that you look at the ONLINE listing of classes? There have been so many last minute changes to the schedule, even within this past week, that the hardcopy form (placed in your mailboxes) does not reflect such changes. We have any number of Specialists who are, sadly, unable to return--- their classes and/or time slots have been reassigned. The most up-to-the-moment version is therefore online. We apologize for changes – just know, we’ve adjusted as quickly as possible to those inevitable life changes that affect what we offer in classes. That said…may the registration process go smoothly for each of you, and may your kiddos be as pleased with their choices as we are to offer them!

Here we are, experiencing some deep, frigid temperatures yet again, this week. And you know what? We have kid coats in the lost and found. It reminds me of this bit of nonsense I heard outside, on the playground- Question: What’s a coat? Answer: Something you wear when your Mom is cold. Ha, ha - TRUTH!

If your children are attending on-site classes this coming semester, please remember that registration is NEXT week, starting Monday, Jan 10. All pertinent information: CLASSES, DAYS and TIME for your family to register for those very classes, along with added reminders are all contained in the scheduling packet. There’s a copy in each family mailbox, as well as online. Feast away!

THANK YOUS and CUDOS(!!) to our Drama students who presented Treasure Island this past weekend. The cast had their audiences engaged and clapping and thoroughly enjoying the production and student achievement – wonderful job by all! Special thanks to Rachel Horner, who stepped into the director role, was the picture of encouragement to her students, re-wrote the script and brought forth great actors for our enjoyment. YOU are a sweet marvel, Rachel – hats off to you!
With only a few weeks left in 2021, I so thank you for all the smiles and sweet spirit you’ve brought to this fall…one of my best memories was an after-school moment. Our younger kiddos were waiting outside for their parents. An active running/tagging kind of game had resulted in a young kindergartener being tagged a little too enthusiastically. She began to cry, and looked immediately for her (slightly) older brother. He opened his arms, and she clung to him, her arms wrapped totally around him. And there they stood; she crying and clinging, and he, holding tightly and shuuushing. It was as sweet as it was spontaneous. You. Your special families. You model the ways to care for one another, you encourage, and your kids demonstrate the love they have been shown. THAT is the most vital education of all. What a privilege to witness your childrens’ hearts…glorious!

It’s DECEMBER! Whoa, it’s come quickly! Another holiday will be here in no time -and the countdown is on, among our kids! Many folks already have their Christmas trees…a snowy white covers the ground… outside lights bring a glow that’s festive and inviting…and this very setting begs THIS question:
Does every Hallmark movie have the same plot?
Yes.
Am I still going to watch them and act surprised when Susan falls in love with the small time baker who only wears sweaters instead of falling for the big city CEO?
Yes.
Well, we’ve covered THAT about this season! Now it’s on to a few other things!
Drama Performance!! IT’S THIS WEEK…December 10th and 11; show times are 3:00pm and 6:30pm at the Deer Park High School Theater. Our Drama Department is taking you on a journey to “Treasure Island." There will be a total of four performances; two on Friday, and two on Saturday (again, at 3 pm and 6:30 pm respectively). YOU coming?! Of course! Tickets are required for all shows BUT the tickets are free and are available at the front desk. Ask Connie!

YESIRREE, we do have classes next week. We’ll have our regularly scheduled classes on Monday and Tuesday. Then, Wednesday, classes will be held in the morning, ONLY. You, my friends whose children take Wednesday classes, will have your chariots poised to pick up your children at your morning site at noon, engine revved and ready to race home to start peeling those potatoes for the smashing and mashing that must happen to transform them into readiness for the.. GRAVY. Ahhh. And it all starts by being at school, on time, for your beloveds! RIGHT???!!
There are two remaining ‘Welcome Wednesdays’ at the Skills Center for you/and a son or daughter to choose from, if you’d like to visit classes, and take-in all the Skills center offers. The first is Friday, Dec 3, or that following Wednesday, Dec 8. Home Link students do extremely well, and leave high school with marketable skills and confidence. You can’t beat it! And, drum roll…yes, students can be applying NOW to attend the Skills center second semester.
We are offering the ASVAB test for our high school juniors and seniors on Dec 17th. Interested?! Good! Contact your Consultant, please!

What a month to be thankful! As we crescendo towards the holiday and experience the lift it brings to celebrate the joy of where we live, and with whom…may it all be savored with humility and a spirit of gratitude.

Also – while mentioning November dates, in 2 weeks, during Thanksgiving week, as always, Home Link will have regularly scheduled classes on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday MORNING, only. At noon, we turn into pumpkins who must shop and prepare for the next day’s feast. Children who are forgotten by their parents will be allowed to forage and find enough leftovers in our kitchen refrigerators for the 4 ½ day break. We have couches, two blankets in my office, and tapes for the TV’s. Many changes of clothing are possible through our Lost and Found. Also some writing prompts on ‘My loneliest Thanksgiving ever.’ All the essentials!

If you’re looking for a stand-out beautiful book about Thanksgiving- The First Thanksgiving, by Jean Craighouse George (Julie of the Wolves and My Side of the Mountain) and Thomas Locker, stunning illustrator. The book shares that the Pilgrims called the celebration the Harvest Feast. The Pawtuxet Indians thought of it as the Green Corn Dance. BUT the first Thanksgiving was much more than that, and Thomas Locker’s oil paintings bring beauty to every page. Perhaps you all have a favorite Thanksgiving book? Bring it out, and enjoy afresh! Isn’t that what this holiday is all about… gathering together amid family traditions in a country unlike any other. BLESSED, are we!

There are 202 pairs of happy feet! THANKS to all of you! Socktober produced warm, heavy socks galore for the homeless…80 pairs of socks will be delivered to Crosswalk; and 61 pairs of socks will be given to Blessings under the Bridge. Aren’t you something??! (There are also 6 pairs of gloves, and 3 toasty hats for good measure!) MUCH generosity = much good!

Home Link Junior, Johnny Brooks is representing Newport this Saturday, competing in the Cross Country State Championship for division 1A. CONGRATULATIONS to him! What a personal accomplishment- go like the wind, JD!

Some final honorees will receive the Character trait of POSITIVE ATTITUDE this week. We have so many students with encouraging, upbeat attitudes – how we love their good cheer. ‘He who looks for good, finds good will.’ These kids are wise beyond their age…and it’s such a brighter world because of them!
Thanks for remembering that there’s only ONE entrance door at the Deer Park and Clayton sites. And when students come through those doors – if they’re late, we continue to ask that they stop at the main desk so that we know they’re among us. Otherwise, they’re absent in the system - can’t have that!
The winners in the Pumpkin Decorating Contest (extraordinary efforts!! 65 stunningly clever entries, by the way!) are as follows – in the K – 2 group: Emerson Brittain (The green stem fire-breathing Dumpkin!) in the 3 – 5 grade grouping: Colton Birky (Quill and Hedge, the candy corn hedgehogs!) and in the 6-8 grade category: Joeli Thomas (Movie theater night popcorn !) lastly the 9-12 grouping was Brooke House (Charlie Brown Pumpkin Patch!) The winner in the best overall; Maddy Birky (The ultimate cheese burger, with cocoa Krispy patty, fondant lettuce, cheese and tomato with tic tac sesame seeds!) Whooeeee - The Charity Never Fails class did such a fantastic job in selecting this contest, and managing it – our grateful thanks! To each parent, staff and student who voted – whew, you know how challenging these contests were. And to all who beautified and slaved over their unique creations??? Enormous THANKS for participating!! Come pick up those most wondrous creations no later than this Thursday, Oct 28thbecause some are starting to ooze!
I’ve been incredibly impressed with your responses to SOCKTOBER – wow, what a great outreach of warmth you’ve brought to those who are homeless. Our onsite collection sites for these new socks - boxes with balloons spotlighting where to drop off contributions at each campus is getting full and ready to be shared. Remembering that socks are the number one need of those who’ve very little to call their own- we say THANK YOU for your kindness and empathy for many among us. You have terrific hearts!

Way back when, well, actually it was in 1969, I read a just-published novel, ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.’ It was something. On the heels of the tumultuous 60’s, it was really something. Maya Angelou’s first book. Here are some later words, I bet you know many of them, written in a letter to her daughter: “I’ve learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I’ve learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you’ll miss them when they’re gone from your life. I’ve learned that making a ‘living’ is not the same thing as making a ‘life.’ I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back. I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I’ve learned that even when I have pains, I don’t have to be one. I’ve learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back. I’ve learned that I still have a lot to learn. I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Pretty beautiful, isn’t it. Aren’t the colors of the world around us just a visual pallet of goodness? There’s a striking burnt orange-red color that accents all the gold (bet you’ve noticed!)… ‘tis is the perfect backdrop for a Robert Louis Stevenson poem called Autumn Fires:
In the other gardens, And all up the vale,
From the autumn bonfires See the smoke trail!
Pleasant summer over And all the summer flowers,
The red fire blazes, The gray smoke towers.

A wide-eyed five-year-old repeated the poem to me multiple times this past week, pleased as punch with herself! YOU have a little one who might like to ‘perform’ and wow people??? You’re welcome!

Yes, that tremendous Character trait for October is POSITIVE ATTITUDE. Such students see the best in each person and situation – they are cheerful, joyful and thankful for all that each day brings. Don’t you just love them??! They make the world go round! A big thank you ahead of time, to each of the students selected for this character trait!!

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! (WHO, oh who, remembers this cast of characters??? Charlie Brown, Sally Brown, Franklin, Frieda, the little Red-Haired Girl, Marcie, Peppermint Patty, Pig-Pen, Schroeder, Shermy, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy, Rerun, Violet, Woodstock??) Well, they’d ALL be so proud of our Pumpkin Decorating Contest, sponsored by the Charity Never Fails class. And THIS is the final week! Both your child’s entry form, and his/her beautifully decorated pumpkin (NOT CARVED!!) must be dropped off at either the Deer Park, or Clayton campus no later than THIS Thursday, Oct 21st. All of the participating entries will be judged on Oct 22nd.The categories are by grade: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Be creative and have a ball with this! The judging for the best overall pumpkin in each grade category will be through both student/staff voting – THANKS for participating!!
